B. Global News Installation on some existing website - top

To install Global News on existing website, just upload global_news directory from "Existing Drupal Installation", to http://[your site]/sites/all/themes. Then from the top menu select Appearance, find Global News theme and click Enable and set default.

C. Theme settings - top

After you have installed the theme, you can change its settings Appearance - Theme settings. Here you can switch some elements of the website on/off, as well as change the logo and favicon.

Besides, there is Additional Options section, where users with admin role can change color scheme of the site, switch between liquid and fixed layout and set up breadcrumbs.

Also, there are such settings of the website, as Configuration - Site information. On this page ther are three sections of the sett ings are showed.

As you can see the site has theme styling block:

This block is visible for everyone, but changes that do this block are visible for each user individual. This means if someone changes "Layout color" it will be visible only to him. If you don't wont that each user change the site like he want, just hide this block on Structure -> Blocks page by drag'n'drop to Disable region.

D. Manage menu - top

On the menu settings page (Structure - Menus), the list of all the available menus on the site that you can manage: add, remove, edit, on/off, move. The menu items which marked with star have been recently moved and they should be saved by clicking the "Save configuration" button.

The "Edit Menu" tab is a page where you can change the menu description. This tab is an analogue of the "Edit menu" text link on the following screenshot:

So, if you need to add a new menu item please do the following: In the Quick access panel choose Structure - > Menus -> find a menu in which you want to add a new menu item and click the "Add link" link -> fill all the fields in and click the "Save" button.

E. Blocks settings - top

A website administrator (you) can manage block displaying. For this you need to go Structure -> Blocks. On the opened page you will find the table of all available website blocks.

The table has 3 columns: 1st column - block name and region name in which it is placed; 2nd - a field for region choosing; 3rd - available operations, such as configuration and deleting. In order to move a block from one region to another just drag-and-drop it with mouse or choose the needed region in the second column opposite the block. To save the changes click the "Save Configuration" button. If you want to switch a block off, then drag-and-drop it into the Disabled region. In addition, on this page there is the "Add block" link for adding your own block. For example, you can create a banner block. To do that, insert an image by using the Visual Editor:

You can easily reach the block settings page by clicking the gear wheel icon in the right top block's corner and choosing the "Configure block" link:

Some blocks are formed by off-site modules and their setting can be done via the admin panel (the "Sructure" top menu item).

F. Manage content - top

All the created website content, comments and webfroms are available on the Content page.

For the quick content search and operations, such as publishing, deleting, there are a handy filter and a form on the page.

On the page below you will find a table with the content which you can sort by columns and do different operations with each of the posts.

On the page there are several post types:

Examine an example of the content creation. Go to the Content page (the "Content" top menu item) -> click the "Add content" link. You will see the page like on the screenshot below. Here you need to choose a suitable content type, for example, Article.

How to create a gallery

Global News includes 2 types of gallery: 3 column and 4 column. These pages form from the news (posts), which have the Gallery content type, and with the help of the View external module. The latest posts are placed on the top of the list. To edit the gallery page you need to go Structure -> Views, then a page will be opened with a list of available views. On this page click the "edit" link in the Gallery line (do not recommend to do any adjustments if you are not sure what you do. Or you can create a backup before make these changes).

Or you can use a quick access to the settings by clicking the gear wheel icon in the right top block's corner and choosing the "Edit view" link.

Here is the Gallery settings and views page. It looks complex but there are built-in tooltips which will help you to understand everything here. Just click the question icon.

G. Contacts - top

To change location marker on the map, select "Content" from the top menu and find "Our location" node (you can use search filter for a quicker searching). In this node you will see the form where you can type your address. Then if you click on "Geocode this address" location marker show this address on the map. If you leave the address empty you can Geocode by moving the marker on the map.

If you want to change content under the map a simple way is mouse hover on the content and you will see the link to configure that block:

H. Manage slider - top

The slider in Global News theme is created using the custom content type "Slider" and Flexslider module. Each slide is a Node with Slider content type.

Fine tuning slider is on Configuration - Flexslider, where you can find Flexslider presets. To change settings, click to Edit link in Slider row. There are many various settings like Animation, Effects, Sliding speed etc.

I. How to Make a Backup - top

Before template adjustment or any other important changes, we recommend you to make a data backup. It will help you to save the data, in case if something happens wrong. It is very easy to make the backup. Please do the following:

  1. Go to the Structure top menu item -> Snapshots. A new page will be opened and you will see already existing backups with their size and date of creation.
  2. Click the "Create snapshot" buton.
  3. Type a title and a description (optional).
  4. Click the "Create" button.

After that, you can see your snapshot in the list. If you need to backoff (return) to your backup, you need go to the "Reset" tab -> choose the needed snapshot and click "Reset".

If you have difficulties with the website settings and management or cannot find an answer in the documentation, then the in-built user website help will help you. You can find it in the Help top menu item. This is basic information which will help you to administer the website and learn more information about the modules:

K. FAQ - top

Q. There is no Demonstration profile on the first step of installation.
A. Please check the profiles folder in the root of your drupal. It must contain demo_profile folder. If not, copy it from sources.

Q. During restoring the snapshot I have "Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in script".
A. Make following changes in your php.ini file: max_execution_time = 0. Or contact with your hosting support.

Q. On the Choosing snapshot page I have warnings "Warning: date() []".
A. You can ignore these warnings because they do not affect the website. Otherwise uncomment and edit this line in your php.ini file: date.timezone = "Europe/Helsinki". You can find valid time zone strings at

Q. Somethings goes wrong, I want to reset all modifications. Do I need to reinstall the theme?
A. Actually no, you can always back to the default Global News settings. Just go to Structure - Snapshots, click on Reset tab, then choose Global News snapshot and click on Reset button.
Note: This method DO NOT applied for modifications in code.

Q. After installation complete I have an Warnings like "Warning: file_put_contents(temporary://fileYabvs) [function.file-put-contents]: failed to open stream"
A. It's mean that your site can't write temporary files for correct work. Simplest way to fix it is select Configuration - File system from top menu and press Save configuration. It's update access rules to the public and private folders on your site.
